Wi-Fi and Distributed Antenna System (DAS)
In 2005, SITA was awarded a $5.4M multi-faceted contract for wireless and management services for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport by the City of Atlanta’s Department of Aviation (DOA).
SITA’s solution for Atlanta included the design and implementation of an airport-wide Wi-Fi and cellular wireless network, as well as management of the airport’s new fiber, cellular and Wi-Fi network for a period of 1-year.
The total solution for Hartsfield-Jackson Airport covers three main areas:
1) A Wi-Fi system for the entire airport that provides Internet access for all passengers. The wireless system supports data services as well as voice and video. The Wi-Fi system is a secure system for Public and Private use. The Public network is designed for Internet access via a “neutral host” allowing passengers the flexibility to choose their own Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP). The Private network is designed for use by the DOA, the airlines, and airport tenants.
2) A Distributed Antenna System (DAS) designed to support multiple cell phone carriers that provides passengers with high quality cell phone coverage throughout the airport and transportation mall.
3) A fully-managed network operation center with Department of Aviation (airport) and SITA staff on site to provide ongoing operation, security and maintenance of the airport’s fiber network and the wireless network.
Inspired Networks was engaged by SITA as Technical Design Liaison responsible for:
- Delivery of Wi-Fi and Cellular DAS Infrastructure;
- Delivery of Network Operations Center (NOC);
- On-site technical interface with the engineering and delivery project team members from the Department of Aviation for the City of Atlanta, SITA, and third-party vendors guiding the project through the design, implementation, and operational phases;
- Delivery of the Service Delivery Plan [Operational Support Plan] for the Network Operations Center;
- Delivery of the neutral host solution integrating multiple WISPs [Wireless Internet Service Providers] such as Concourse, Sprint, and Boingo; and
- Managing the User Acceptance Testing and Commissioning of Wireless LAN services.
